Early 2000s

A deconstructed hybrid cardigan from Comme des Garçons that merges traditional menswear checks with vivid graphic jersey panels. The body is cut in soft brown gingham cotton, while contrasting sleeves in a circular wax-print motif introduce the tension between familiarity and disruption central to Rei Kawakubo’s design language. Structured through the torso with a clean button-front construction, the silhouette shifts into a more fluid, sculptural form through the mixed textiles and adjustable drawstring cuffs. Balancing elements of cardigan, blouse, and reconstructed shirt, the piece reflects Comme des Garçons’ longstanding exploration of hybrid tailoring, asymmetry, and textile collision.
